Are re-admissions to ICU eligible for SPOT(light)?

Yes – if they have not previously been in the SPOT(light) study.

No – if they have already been in the study.

For example, consider a patient who went to ICU following elective surgery, and discharged because they were doing well.  However, the patient’s condition subsequently deteriorates while they are on the ward and they are reviewed by Outreach.  Outreach contacts the Critical Care Consultant, and the patient is admitted.  This patient was not previously in SPOT(light), and therefore is eligible for entry into the study.

However, should the patient’s original admission have been pneumonia and they had been admitted via the ward the first time -then they would already have been part of the SPOT(light) study.  They wouldn’t therefore be eligible a second time.
